Kirsty fights Frank and escapes from the house on Lodovico Street

The Hellbound Heart

Kirsty fights Frank and escapes from the house on Lodovico Street after discovering that the familiar home has become a place of concealed violence. Her escape begins when she recognizes that the figure wearing Rory’s appearance is not Rory, and turns on her attacker rather than submit to his demands.

Encounter in the House

Kirsty moves through the house looking for Julia, but the bedroom she checks is empty. A cry from farther along the landing draws her attention to a man she recognizes by his clothes: his appearance has changed drastically since he arrived with Julia. He runs toward Kirsty for protection, but Frank emerges behind him and drags him back. The sudden attack makes the danger unmistakable. Kirsty flees, and Frank does not immediately follow; as she reaches the stairs, he addresses her, drawing her back into a confrontation she cannot avoid.

Fighting Back and Escape

Kirsty recognizes that she cannot wait for Frank to relent. She strikes at his face, breaks free, and moves toward the door while keeping close to the wall. When Frank attacks again, she grabs a plain box among the household items and hits him with it. The blow gives her a brief chance to move, but he catches her before she can reach the exit. As she tries to use the box again, Frank stops and demands it; she understands that it matters to him and refuses to hand it over.

Instead, Kirsty throws the box through the window. Frank turns toward it, and she uses that moment to escape the room, make her way downstairs, and get out through the front door. Although Lodovico Street is deserted, she finds the box among the broken glass outside and takes it with her as she runs. She keeps going until she has put distance between herself and the house. Later, on an unfamiliar street, a passerby asks whether she needs help; exhausted and unable to answer coherently, Kirsty loses consciousness.

The Hidden Cause of the Encounter

The danger Kirsty meets in the house has been developing behind the closed door of the Damp room. Julia returns there after Rory’s blood, once visible on the floorboards, has disappeared. In the darkness she sees a damaged human figure held within the wall. It cannot explain its condition, but it identifies itself as Frank Cotton and asks for blood. The brief contact reveals that Frank has been confined in the house, out of reach of the world outside, and that Rory’s spilled blood has given him enough strength to reach Julia.

Julia understands the request as a possibility of restoring the intimacy she had shared with Frank Cotton. She resolves to provide the blood he needs, imagining that his dependence will make him responsive to her, and does not pause over the consequences. She begins killing men to supply him; after one killing, the blood moves toward the wall and the body is drained of its nourishing substance. Meanwhile, Rory takes Julia’s improved mood as evidence that she is happy in their new home and returns to redecorating with renewed energy. The contrast explains the house’s divided appearance: ordinary domestic life continues upstairs while Julia’s covert actions sustain Frank Cotton below.

This history gives the confrontation with Kirsty its larger context. Frank Cotton’s appearance in the house is not a sudden arrival but the consequence of Julia’s continuing effort to restore him. The concealed room, the missing blood, and the bodies left behind connect Kirsty’s flight to a cycle already established before she enters the danger directly.

Recognition of Frank's Disguise

During a later encounter in the house, Kirsty hears Frank speaking through the face of the man she sees as Rory. The ringing bells drown out the words formed by Rory's mouth, but the mismatch between voice and appearance sharpens her suspicion rather than dispelling it. Kirsty recognizes that the figure is Frank, not Rory, and that the familiar face conceals an imposture.

She connects that recognition to what she knows of the house: Rory's corpse remains upstairs, while Frank has taken his brother's skin and joined it to his own body. The realization turns recognition into resistance. Kirsty moves back along the hallway toward Frank, determined to confront the deception and expose who is speaking through Rory's face.
